Origin and History

The American Wirehair is a rare cat breed that originated in the United States in the 1960s. The breed began with a naturally occurring mutation discovered among a litter of farm cats in upstate New York. One unusual kitten had a distinctive wiry, springy coat unlike his littermates, and breeders began selectively developing this trait. The wire-textured coat is caused by a dominant genetic mutation affecting the structure of individual hairs. American Wirehairs were later recognized as a distinct pedigreed breed, although they remain much less common than the American Shorthair from which they share part of their ancestry.

Personality and Temperament

American Wirehairs are generally affectionate, adaptable, playful, and good-natured cats. They tend to form strong bonds with their families while remaining comfortable spending some time independently.
